Why join the UOIT Faculty Association?

As Tenured, Tenure-Track, and Teaching Faculty at UOIT, we believe that our campus is only stronger as we bring more voices to the table.

We believe it is only a matter of time before UOIT recognizes the importance of having you at the table, and most importantly – we believe that the Faculty Association is the best fit for full-time academic staff like yourselves.

Who runs the UOIT Faculty Association?

The UOIT Faculty Association is a democratic organization governed by bylaws that are reviewed its membership on a yearly basis. We hold an Annual General Meeting in April as well as an additional General Membership Meeting, typically in November.

An executive committee is elected from the membership and meets on a monthly basis to guide the work of Faculty Association in-between General Membership Meetings. Additionally, we currently have two staff members that support the work of the Executive on a day-to-day basis.

We also have a number of committees, most of which are listed in our constitution. Committee selection typically takes place in the Summer after the executive starts their term.

How will a contract be negotiated?

All contract negotiations with the University are done with direct consultation from the membership. Additionally, you will elect a team of individuals to represent you in such negotiations – typically amongst your colleagues.

You can learn more about terms and conditions of work we’ve negotiated for our members here:

How old is the UOIT Faculty Association?

We formed the Faculty Association (UOITFA) on July 31st 2007 and were officially recognized (after verification of our majority membership status) by the university in a Voluntary Recognition Agreement dated May 27th, 2008.

Does the UOIT Faculty Association only function within UOIT?

On June 7th, 2008 the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) voted unanimously to accept our application to affiliate with their organization. Shortly thereafter (November 2008), we also joined the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT).

Joining the UOIT Faculty Association not only means joining faculty at UOIT, but faculty across Ontario and Canada!

Additionally, we are also recently affiliated to the Durham Region Labour Council. This means that we are in tune with all kinds of workers in the region which allows us to better represent you.
